The idea that a large number of Mount&Blade players could be able to stay in or move in a line or column formation and follow orders of their officers throughout the entire round simply did not exist before NW (well, the Mount&Musket mod as it was called before evolving into a DLC). Historical context is important here, so it is worth mentioning that these are the same devs who created the M&B: Napoleonic Wars which invented a whole new genre of regimental line battle play. I believe most players are waiting for the game to be actually finished before casual play becomes a thing. The casual scene has a low population, but this is an event-based game anyway. You can also download the free demo and explore tons of features that have already been implemented. You may find a different picture from the one painted by hostile reviews.

To cut to the chase, if some negative reviews are making you indecisive about whether you should risk your family heirloom of $15 on this game, you can simply join the official discord, meet the devs, browse the dev-related channels, and make your own conclusion.

So ye, I got this for free but on occasion I buy the game for friends who are interested in playing and will continue to do so (when on discount :P).
